Some Odds & Ends

Posted in 2008FallTrip on October 1, 2008 by Pat

Planned Distance Traveled: 1635 miles, Actual Distance Traveled: 2150 miles

Planned MPG: 18, Actual MPG: 20.7

Highest price paid for premium fuel: $4.799/gallon, Lee Vining, CA

Average price paid for premium fuel: $4.157/gallon

Best value for lodging: Best Western Antelope Inn, Red Bluff, CA ~$80 for a very nicely furnished room, right off I-5, near many good places to eat.

Worst value for lodging: I won’t say in a public forum like this blog. All I will say is it was a close call among three different motels.

The one place I wish I spent more time: Lassen Volcanic National Park

The one place I wish I spent less time: None, it was a great adventure.

Final thought: We have a wonderful Creator. How anyone can argue there is no Creator after seeing and experiencing what I have seen and experienced over the past week?

Change in Plans

I had been planning on visiting the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest but plans have changed. The pines are at an altitude above 10,000′ and the air at that altitude is just too thin for me. I’ve been sucking wind for the past few days because most of my time is being spent about 7000′. I also noticed the weather report for my planned return of Friday/Saturday is predicting a nasty storm. I’ve decided I’ve seen enough and am headed home and should be there tomorrow. At this time I am sitting in a real nice hotel room in Red Bluff. The drive from June Lake was extremely tiring as I took a “short cut” that had lots of road construction, several passes over 7000′ and narrow roads. I must say it was a beautiful drive – just a long drive.

Not a bad place to stay and venture out. Mono Lake is 15 miles. The Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite is about 25 miles, but it is about 90 miles to Yosemite Village.

After photographing the sunrise at Mono Like I went to Yosemite via Tioga Pass – 9945 feet in elevation. I mentioned in an earlier post that Yosemite Village was a zoo. There were people everywhere. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Here are a couple of photos I managed to get in Yosemite. The photo of Half Dome gives some idea of the smog level – not bad, but not great.

I arrived nice and early at Mono lake this morning. This image was taken about 30 minutes before sunrise.

I was just about to pack up when I glanced to my right and saw this image happening. I’m glad I didn’t pack up!
